While Cyanogen is busy working on a pure Android 2.0 (aka Eclair) based ROM for G1 and Magic, he just gave us a new bugfix release in the meantime:
CyanogenMod 4.2.6
What has changed? To be honest, the previous 4.2.5 was indeed almost perfect (USB Tethering, Eclair animations, high speed, new address book, etc.). So this update brings only slight improvements:
- More icons and graphics from Android 2.0
- More stable Bluetooth OBEX FTP
- Various other bug fixes (for instance in the kernel)
Steve Kondik has released version 4.2.1 of his CyanogenMod.
The new version of the popular Android variant includes
- Android 1.6 (aka Donut)
- All of Google's apps
- a few more apps
- five homescreens
- Multitouch in the browser
- Landscape mode (even with devices without a Keyboard)
Also there are no more vioaltions of Google's C&D in this version, because this version requires the user to download a system which is hosted by the device manufacturer as well as the CyanogenMod.
I am highly satisfied with the outcome, be it speed, stability of functionality. Everything works perfectly.
Switching to the Google sanctioned version of CyanogenMod is unfortunately significantly more effort than ever before. Here my little handy guide for the G1 with Cyanogen Recovery 1.4 (do this at your own risk):
- Download original HTC Android Image Recovery 1.6 from here: http://developer.htc.com/adp.html # s3
- Download CyanogenMod installer here: http://n0rp.chemlab.org/android/experimental/update-cm-4.1.9999-signed.zip
- Copy both files to your SD card
- Turn off this device and restart with the Home + Power buttons pressed
- In the recovery menu select "wipe data", then "go to type in console", press Enter to confirm, then enter "upgrade_fs" (which will turn your Ext2 filesystem into Ext3), then enter "reboot"
- During reboot press and hold the Home button again to return into recovery menu
- Select "Apply any zip from sd" from the menu, then choose "signed-dream_devphone ..." for installation
- Without restarting the device select "Apply any zip from sd" again and choose "update-cm-4.1.9 ..." this time
- Choose "reboot system have now", then be patient
If the system is unbearably slow after installation, most likely the filesystem on your SD card is not switched to ext3 (see Step 5).
